Submarine uniforms were divided into two main types: standard Navy uniforms worn in a shore setting and those uniforms which were worn onboard submarines while at sea. While on shore, submarine officers and crew members ore the same uniforms as the rest of the German Navy.

The standard at-sea uniform for submarine crews consisted of a grey smock coat worn with all-weather over trousers.  Officers and chiefs wore this uniform with a brown denim jacket.

When entering and exiting port, tin copies of high ranking medals, such as the iron or Knight's Cross, would be worn for show. Awards and medals were never displayed routinely once at sea.

Engine room personnel would often wear civilian clothing, due to the close confines of the engine spaces as well as the hot and humid working conditions.  One modicum for the ship's Chief Engineer was the "checked shirt" (see right) which was worn when on duty in the engineering spaces.

In warmer and tropical climates, U-boat captains would often order "relaxed dress" which allowed crew members to remove parts of their uniform for comfort. Another type of modified uniform was "battle dress", consisting of flak jackets and helmets, often worn by personnel deployed to man deck guns and anti-aircraft mounts.
