The Original Silent Hunter

The original Silent Hunter placed the player in command of an American submarine in the Pacific between 1942 and 1945.  The player is issued mission orders for which the submarine must achieve in order for the mission to be rated as a success.  The player may earn promotions and medals for victory, but also will be relieved of duty (and the game ending) if missions are consecutively failed.

In order to operate and navigate the submarine, Silent Hunter allowed the player to rotate through various stations on-board the submarine, but there were no visible crew members, leaving the player to manual command each of the available controls.

Silent Hunter was a DOS based game released in 1996, with limited graphics, but was nevertheless considered a commercial success with over 300,000 copies sold.  Silent Hunter also established many of the general game-play themes to which later sequels would adhere.
